Brainglass intends to develop language learning content for web- and mobile applications based on its online learning platform.
Content development will range between the following levels of complexity, requiring different skill sets and levels of competence.
Synchronization between e-books and audio books
The most basic task consists of synchronizing text and audio files, using a timestamp-software developed by Brainglass. A text and audio file is parsed by the software, and the task is to divide the audio into appropriate sections, then split text in appropriate chunks, then set timestamps at the start of each chunk as the sound file is played. Resolution is 10th of second. The software then automatically splits the sound file according to the sections set and creates an xml-file containing the synchronization information. If discrepancies between text and sound are discovered during the process, the text file can be modified slightly to fit the sound.
Input: txt-file, audio file, Timestamp software
Deliverables: xml-file, audio files split according to sections, (edited) text file
Required skill set:
- Good English language skills
- Intermediate computer users who will be able to use our software with a graphical user interface
- Thorough and accurate, results should not have to go through further quality assurance
- No programming skills necessary
Development of Grading Standard for Readers (one-time project)
Analysis of currently available grading standards on the market, both commercial and academic, and define a Brainglass standard. Define how the standard relates to various standardized English Language Exams and national curriculum.
Required skill set:
- Good English language skills
- Intermediate computer users who will be able to use our software with a graphical user interface
- Thorough and accurate, results should not have to go through further quality assurance
- No programming skills necessary
Re-writing of English texts into graded readers
In some cases, texts will need to be simplified in order to fit a certain level of difficulty. The task will include re-writing classic novels and short stories into simplified versions at various levels of difficulty, based on certain parameters, including size of vocabulary used, frequency of the vocabulary in the English language, complexity of grammar, etc. Also cleaning texts from archaic vocabulary, spelling and grammar.
Input: Texts in English, such as novels, short stories, newspaper articles, etc.
Deliverables: Simplified versions of texts at various levels of difficulty according to standardized grading system
Required skill set:
- Excellent English language skills
- Creative English writing skills, including experience from editing or writing English language texts or language learning materials
- Backgrounds in linguistics, lexicography, English language teaching.
- Thorough and accurate, results should not have to go through further quality assurance
- No programming skills necessary
